Grand
opening of the Ager House library
Further
information
New spring/fall 2008
classes offered at the Ager House
Some new classes
are being offered at the Ager House this spring. Beginning on
March 14th, Gail Olah will teach a three-hour rosemaling class
in a series of seven sessions on Friday afternoons. Twelve beginning
and advanced rosemaling enthusiasts are enrolled. And, to accommodate
students on a waiting list, Virgina VanVuren has agreed to teach
a second session of chip carving classes beginning on Thursday,
April 3rd. The cost of the six-week course is $30.00. Anyone
interested should call Ev Krigsvold at 715-835-8718 to enroll.
Looking
ahead to fall, 2008, Colette Halford has agreed to teach a German
language class at the Ager House during the summer and/or in
the fall of this year. Also, in response to her students’
requests, Louise Koxlien will teach another Hardanger embroidery
class in the fall. All those people who are interested should
call Ev Krigsvold at 715-835-8718 NOW because the teachers would
like to know students’ preferences for dates and times
the classes should be offered. The German class must have at
least six students, and the Hardanger class can have no more
than twelve.
An
opportunity for the Ager Association
The property
to the north of the Ager House is a derelict duplex that has
gone through foreclosure. A bank in Osseo had the original mortagage,
but they sold it to a California mortgage broker who now has
the property for sale. Aaron Brunette of the Haselwander Agency
is handling the sale. The asking price is $48,900.00, but a
much lower offer might be successful.
Right
now the property is condemned, and it is possible that someone
could buy it, fix the most basic code violations, and rent out
the two apartments.
Some members
of the Ager Board think that this is a golden opportunity to
improve our neighborhood and add parking spaces for the Ager
House. The city also has an interest in the property because
the long-range plan is for a bike path to go through the lot
directly to the west. However, because of budget issues, the
city would need considerable encouragement to purchase the property.
Some of
us believe that the best use of this currently condemned property
would be to tear it down and convert the space to a “pocket
park” and a few more parking spaces. Right now, however,
we are searching for ways to make that happen. Please, if you
have suggestions or are willing to work on this opportunity,
contact Ken Ziehr at 715-832-0956 or kenziehr@charter.net.
Monthly
meetings of the Board of Directors
We invite
you to join us for monthly meetings at the Ager House and to
feel free to participate in always-lively discussions. From
September through May, the meetings are at 9:00 a.m. on the
third Monday of each month.
During June, July, and August, the Board meets at 9:00 a.m.
on the third Thursday of the month.
Wanted:
Youthful Fiddlers
The Eau
Claire Youth Spellmanslag, a high school age fiddle group that
plays mostly Scandinavian fiddle tunes, is looking for some
new recruits who would like to learn folk fiddling. Earl Holzman,
instructor, says beginners are welcome, and there is no charge
for participation. The group meets on Sunday evenings from 7
p.m. until
8:30 p.m.
Holzman will also be teaching dance lessons this
winter in preparation for the Nordic Ball in the Twin
Cities. The lessons will focus on the waltz, polka,
schottische, and hombo. If there is enough interest, these sessions
could become a regular activity.
Holzman also does some woodcarving and is willing to share this
knowledge with anyone who is interested. For more information,
call Holzman at (715) 833-0462.
Ager
House to be used for special events
Over the last few years, there have been a number
of requests to use the Ager House for special events. A wedding
reception, a birthday party, and a family reunion have all been
held at the "Ager." People who have used the house
have made donations to the Ager Association
because there is no rental fee for these kinds of occasions.
With more requests being made for use of the facility,
members of the Board are designing a brochure about the types
of events and the number of people that can be accommodated
at the house in the future. It is hoped
that everyone will feel welcome at the Ager House and will use
it as part of the Eau Claire community, so watch for more information
soon!
Help
Wanted
The Ager
Association needs volunteers to provide baked goods for special
events: Advent at the Ager House, Ice Cream and Pie Social,
and the General Membership meeting. If you are willing to help
in this way, please contact a board member.
